An empty toy gets abandoned in about four minutes. Stuff this one with kibble or treats and it stops being a ball and becomes a job — your dog has to nudge, chew and roll it to get anything out.

It works as a fetch ball too, so it earns its place either way.

What it does

• Hollow centre for treats — load it with kibble, treats, or a smear of something sticky to make it harder
• Natural rubber — more give than hard plastic, and enough grip to bounce unpredictably when you throw it
• Three sizes — small, medium and large, so you can match it to your dog's mouth
• Singles and two-packs — the second one earns its keep: load one, freeze it, rotate

Which size

• Small — puppies, toy and small breeds
• Medium — most dogs, if you're unsure this is the one
• Large — big mouths, and anything that could get a smaller ball too far back

Size up rather than down. A ball your dog can fit entirely in their mouth is the one to avoid.

Using it safely

Supervise chewing, as with any toy. Take it away once it's chewed down small enough to swallow, and check it over now and then for splits. No toy is indestructible — anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

Common questions

What do I put in it? Dry kibble falls out easily, which suits a dog new to the idea. Once they've got it, pack it tighter or add something sticky to slow them down.

Will it survive a serious chewer? It's rubber, not armour. It holds up to normal chewing and fetch; a dog that destroys everything will get through this too, and the Pack Promise covers you if it fails early.

Can I freeze it? Freezing a stuffed toy makes it last a lot longer. Let it thaw slightly before giving it to a small dog.

Is it a fetch ball or a treat toy? Both, which is most of the appeal — empty for the park, loaded for a rainy afternoon.
